Why do we have hair loss

February 1st, 2010

Hair is not known as crowning glory for nothing. And that’s why hair loss, is one of the biggest beauty concerns. Not just beauty, but hair loss can cause psychological depression among people. No one wants to lose hair or go bald.

But what are the reasons that cause hair loss? Let us take a look at a few of them.

Childbirth can be a major cause for hair fall. This is because during pregnancy, a woman has a lot of hair growth. Once the baby has been delivered, the excess hair that grew during pregnancy starts to fall. As a result, there is quite some hair loss.

High levels of stress, major surgeries and operation, infections and high fever can also lead to hair loss. Also, the heavy medications associated with these may have side effects which lead to hair fall. Medical conditions such as thyroid adversely affects hair growth, and leads to hair fall. Fungal infection and ringworm can also be the culprit. Continuous hair fall leads to hair loss.

Poor and inadequate nutrition is a key factor that promotes hair loss. The diet has to be well balanced with a high content of iron and proteins. The deficiency of the required minerals and vitamins hampers the growth of hair.

Many people inherit heredity hair loss problems. In fact the majority of hair fall reasons can be attributed to heredity. This is known as Androgenetic Alopecia. It is also referred to as male or female pattern baldness.

Proper treatment can help in treating hair loss. You can go to a dermatologist or doctor. Once the root cause for the hair loss is found, adequate treatment can help in preventing further hair loss.

The Truth about biotin and Hair Loss

January 14th, 2010

What is biotin and how it is related with hair loss?

Biotin has been classified as a B-complex water-soluble vitamin. It has only been categorised as a vitamin after research of some 40 long years. Biotin is an essential vitamin and is needed by every organism. It is only synthesized by a number of plant species, yeast, algae, and bacteria.

The bacteria in your body are what play a major role in making Biotin. Several studies indicate that Biotin or Vitamin B7 assists in hair growth and also in preventing brittle nails.

Often biotin supplements are recommended to combat hair loss but there exist no definite study that indicates Biotin helps treat hair loss when there is no biotin deficiency. However, if an individual is deficient in Vitamin B6, Inositol, Biotin and Folic Acid, chances of hair loss is high. It has been found that Pantothenic Acid, Niacin and Biotin help promote healthy hair growth. The benefits of biotin are far too many and include,

  • Used widely as a hair growth vitamin
  • Helps prevent excessive hair loss
  • Accelerates metabolism of fatty acids and promotes growth

The symptoms of a deficiency in Biotin include hair loss, loss of eyelashes and eyebrows in severe cases. There are shampoos available on the market that is rich in Biotin, but their effectiveness is questionable as Biotin is not very well absorbed through the skin.

It has been established that hair loss in men is a hereditary disease, but it has also been found that eating a well-balanced diet that nourishes your body with the proper minerals and vitamins, can slow down process of hair loss. Some foods that are a rich source of Biotin includes liver, chicken, kidney, milk, egg, beef, yeast, cheese and peanuts. Men can also take a Vitamin B7 Biotin supplement to reduce hair loss.

The Many Causes Of Hair Loss

December 16th, 2009

Hair loss can happen for many reasons. Generally, the normal cycle of hair growth has a duration of approximately 2 to 6 years. Although some hair shedding can happen during this time, it is when the hair shedding becomes excessive that one might consider treatments. Below you will find some of the causes to hair loss.

Major illness plays a big role in hair loss. Usually, it is only temporary and the hair will grow back once the illness is no longer present.

Abnormalities in the body’s chemistry such as thyroid disease can lead to the loss of hair. The thyroid hormones regulate your metabolism and when your thyroid is not functioning properly, this is when you might experience hair loss. Another fluctuation in the body could result from giving birth. This also is a temporary hair loss situation. Other causes for the loss of hair are chemotherapy, fungal infections, radiation treatments, some prescription drugs and stress.

Stress is not great for the body and can actually wreak havoc on it resulting in a number of mental, emotional and physical symptoms. One of these symptoms can be hair loss which is known as Telogen Effluvium. When the body is stressed it disrupts normal hair growth. Now, couple this up with your body lacking necessary vitamins and minerals and your hair follicles go into what is known as a rest period.

Hair falls out daily, but because it is replaced by new hair, you hardly notice. When your hair follicles are in this rest period, new hair stops growing and your hair loss will begin to get noticeable. The good news is that it is also a temporary situation and can be treated.

Genetic predisposition is the leading reason for long term hair loss and typically this is when treatments should be considered. There are supplements that can be taken to promote hair growth, however, it is advised that you speak with your dermatologist first and weigh out your options.

What You Need In Your Hair Loss Shampoos

December 2nd, 2009

Hair is not just a part of our physical appearance; it also plays an important role in boosting our confidence while interacting with others. Thus, the loss of hair can be an emotionally draining experience for most human beings, whether male or female. Though there are many over the counter medicines, shampoos, pills, oils and a host of other products that promise to stop your hair loss and even, in some cases, help you to regain your hair, yet many of these sadly feel to meet the mark. So if you want to choose a shampoo that will deliver what it promises, here are some facts and tips that can help you to make the right choice.

A good hair loss shampoo should be able to reduce or at least neutralize the effect of DTH, which is present in the hair follicles and globally believed to be the main cause behind hair loss or even genetic baldness. Some of the ingredients that the right hair loss shampoo should contain include:

Cystine

An important form of protein and a part of the most important amino acids that are scientifically proved to reduce hair loss, Cystine may be broadly classified as ‘amino acids’ on the label of your bottle of shampoo. Another important amino acid that can prevent hair loss is Methionine.

Nitroxide compounds

Known for their property of improving blood circulation on your scalp, the presence of Nitroxide compounds in your shampoo can work wonders for your hair.

Saw palmetto extract

This ingredient is directly related to reduction of the production of DTH as its application can transform DTH into testosterone, which is proven to stop hair loss.

Biotin, Wheat protein, B Vitamins

These are all kinds of natural proteins and vitamins, which can help your hair to produce Keratin, a protein, which in turn prevents hair fall.

Latest Hair Transplant Techniques

December 2nd, 2009

Have you always felt that your confidence would be enhanced if you had healthy hair? Or are you recently noticing a prominent pattern of hair loss? If you are answering yes to any of these questions, then perhaps, Hair transplant can be a perfect solution for your problems. Though done through surgical means by a competent surgeon, the science of hair transplant has undergone massive developments in the recent years.

One of the most important techniques used in the latest hair transplant techniques include follicular hair transplant. Also, known as FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction, this is perhaps the most popular hair transplant techniques available today. In this a single follicular unit is extracted as an intact unit and then transplanted as an intact unit again in the head so that it can grow. During this care is taken to make sure that the nerves and blood tissues which had supported the hair before its extraction still surrounds the transplanted area in the head as it did before. The most important advantage of follicular hair transplant is the fact that the patient can go home after 3 or 4 hours and can even wash the hair after 3 days.

An even latest technique in the field of hair transplant procedures is Laser Hair transplant. Though begun as a means of correcting hair fall, the popularity of Laser Hair transplant grew largely to the fact that it produced more natural looking hair and also repaired the damaged molecules of the scalp.

There are several centers scattered all around the world, where one can go and opt for any of these latest hair transplant techniques, which are available at quite reasonable prices. The patient may have to spend a few hours at the center after the surgery, which is in most cases risk-free.

the disappearance of the hair

November 10th, 2009

This is an article about hair loss, symptoms, treatments, and causes. Do men and women lose hair in different ways? Well. Hair loss is hair loss whatever your gender. The thing that is different is that it is not socially accepted for a woman to lose her hair. Its seen as a natural thing to happen to men, Inevitable in fact. But for a woman there is much more stigma connected with it. More social embarrassment and I would imagine more money spent by women on seeking out a remedy or cure, or, in the face of only wanting a natural (not chemical or surgical cure) women are more likely to turn to the use of wigs, hats and scarves to disguise the fact that their hair is falling out. Its as though there is some sort of blame to be accounted for, like its the persons fault that their body is somehow letting them down.

So, what are the options for hair loss? Well, you can wear a hat. You can use chemicals or drugs, or you can shave off the remaining hair and just get used to being bald. It really is a personal choice. though clearly social stigma, finances and attitude will all contribute to the choice made.

For me, personally, I do not think that putting chemicals in to my body, or going through medical procedures to try and reverse the effects are worth it. Do they work anyway, from the research i’ve carried out it seems all very confusing with all the fancy claims, but medically hair restoration treatments are not proven. losing hair is a natural phenomenon. I could be tempted to try a natural option, maybe homeopathic medicine but I would want to carry out heaps of research beforehand.

Fighting Hair Loss In Men

October 20th, 2009

Hair loss has become a common problem in people, especially men. This could be the lack of iron or condition of their skin on their scalp. Also, an excess of a hormone called DHT is usually the main cause.

Most men turn to medicine such as Rogaine, Minoxidil or a hair transplant as the solution. However, these types of treatments can get very expensive and can come with side effects.

Specialists are now saying that a more natural hair loss treatment can benefit a man with hair loss. Some natural treatments would include a high protein diet, low in carbs and fat and foods rich in Omega-3 and Omega 6 fatty acids which contain anti-inflammatory properties that prevent hair loss and maintain healthy hair.

Another treatment that is becoming more popular these days is the use of Saw Palmetto. This herb lowers levels of DHT which again, is the leading cause of hair loss.

You can go with the medicines if you want, but to avoid the unwanted side effects, you might want to consider a more natural treatment first.

What is FUE?

November 26th, 2008

FUE stands for Follicular Unit Extraction that is a hair restoration surgery that involves directly extracting the patient’s hair follicles from a ‘doner area’ using an instrument called trephine then they are implanted in to the desired area.

This procedure has a lot of different benefits it have very minimal invasive surgery and a very short recovery time. FUE is very quick and the scarring is very very minimal. It is also preferred because there is a very low risk of complications. This hair transplant surgery is fast becoming the standard offering and the surgeons who have mastered it are in great demand.
